John Verde, early in his business career as a USPTA tennis pro teaching and selling tennis court equipment in Dallas, TX. John sought for a way to shelter “Sonny” his newly acquired horse. Having only a pasture, no barn and low money, the thought occurred of using some discarded tennis court windscreens to block the blowing wind, rain and sun. In the 70’s, using a metal roof fastened to his garage, looking much like a pole barn, he attached polypropylene fabric onto the open sides. “It worked – no water - no wind – no mud – no sun” --- “Sonny immediately had cool shade and a weather-proof stall.”
Several years later, Jim Willoughby, a NRHA Hall of Fame member, wondered if the screens around tennis courts could help block the wind and rain on his open-sided barn while still offering needed ventilation. Jim found John’s windscreen business in Ft. Worth, they met and worked on solving just how screens could be held in place without a normal chain-link fence structure. Credit Jim with the idea of welding metal lacing rods around edges of the open sides of his barn to provide strong supports. Once the rods were in place - the screens were tightly attached … results … ventilated weather screens for barns.
